Development

OVERVIEW:

For this project, we created an impossible space related to food. It is a VR game where the player is placed in a dreamlike world full of food. But this world is not your normal world. It is built with food and only food. Whether it be a city, an ice cream wonderland, or a mountain forest side. The player is supposed to venture into this world of food and seek out food within a certain time limit to get to the next food level world.

Process:

Inspired by the dreamland of food from Sharkboy and Lavagirl and Charlie the Chocolate Factory, we wanted to create a similar type of dreamlike space filled with food. The impossible space aspect relates to the fact that it’s a world built only with food ( for example a bike with donut tires, a house built of a loaf of bread, etc). We were a group where our strengths mostly lied on the aesthetics and visuals, so we leaned into making a world that was visually striking to enhance the experience.

At first, we wanted a world full of only desserts and wanted to create a newly developed world inspired by those movies, but we thought that maybe including different food would make this dreamlike world more interesting (like hotdogs, hamburgers, sushi rolls, french fries, and etc).  We thought of making 3 levels, each level being an appetizer, main dish, and the desserts level. But midway into the building of the game, we realized that it was difficult to only make a world limited to the food within those categories. So we decided to merge all the foods together. Each person worked on a different world level which brought a different style of this "dreamlike world" come to play.

Playtest:

Players found it hard to navigate through the level as the walking speed of the controller decreases as they entered the second and the third level. Some times when the player enters the second world, players aren't able to move because of the player controller is floating in the air. There's a bug with the controller that the direction of the buttons are going the opposite direction. Some 3D textures are also missing during the play test when it is relaunched. Many of them loved how oversize food objects appears in such a world that makes them feels like a child and expressed that it is exciting to play if there is more things they can do by introducing some interactive elements.

Although there wasn't any playable mechanics in the world space, some players liked to just grab and throw objects and stack them on top of each other. Or just exploring the space then put two food objects together and see what happens--they expressed if they can cook, or make something out of it.

Players would like to have more sound effects, to be able to jump, go inside the house, some suggested to even have more players maybe competing against each other or other humans inside the world space, maybe they can order foods...etc
